I have naturally healed many of my own health issues over the years. It all began with a chronic health condition as a child. When I was 10, I was diagnosed with Rheumatic Fever. The course of treatment at the time (and still used today) is to put the person on penicillin indefinitely.
I did this for 6 years! I was given a throat culture every month to check for Strep and told to continue taking my penicillin daily.
When I was 16 years old, my parents learned of a Naturopathic Doctor in California, Dr. Bernard Jensen. They flew across the country and went to see this doctor. (My dad and two of my brothers also had Rheumatic Fever.) This doctor put Dad on a specific eating plan and a program of herbs and supplements to take.
“Going Natural” as a Teenager
When my parents came home from their visit with Dr. Jensen, our way of eating changed. It was not as dramatic as you might think. We did not grow up drinking sodas or eating a lot of sweets. We could still eat our Gouda cheese sandwiches and an apple with a treat for lunch, but now the bread was whole grain instead of white and the treat was homemade instead of a Hostess HoHo. Breakfasts went from Kellogg’s Special K with milk to oatmeal (and seeds) with a banana. A salad with good quality oils and homemade salad dressing was added to every dinner. My mom also started making homemade yogurt on a weekly basis.
The whole family began eating this way. Believe it or not, within one month our throat cultures started coming back negative. We continued to get the monthly test, but we also started slowly weaning ourselves off the penicillin. Within a year we were officially penicillin free and Rheumatic Fever free— all four of us!
Interestingly, after changing our eating habits, I also no longer got car sick, no longer got swimmer’s ear, and most of my dyslexia was gone.
More Natural Healing
It is because of our healing journey that my mom ended up studying under Dr. Jensen. She became an Iridologist and Kinesiologist and went on to become a Herbalist and a Naturopathic Doctor. She helped many people during her career and taught me many things in the process.
After college, I pursued my dreams of interior design and working in New York City. I continued to follow a fairly healthy lifestyle in the big city. Eventually, I met my husband, got married, and moved to Nashville. I continued practicing interior design and even wrote a book, but I also started not feeling well again.
It took a while to figure out, but, thinking back, I should have known. One of my amalgam fillings had recently been removed. After getting a chipped tooth, the silver filling was ground out with no method of protection; dental damns were not common yet. I did not put the two and two together until I had my first bio-energetic assessment a few months later. The screening showed high levels of mercury as well as a few other heavy metals.
At first I used the more conventional method of chelation therapy for removing the metals, but that made me worse. The process was too much for my body. I ended up using homeopathic remedies to more slowly detoxify the toxic metals and started feeling better.
It also eventually uncovered an underlying issue of Lyme Disease (which I have come to find out is not unusual since symptoms can be very similar). Working closely with the bio-energetic practitioner, she helped me to put together a natural healing program and continued to monitor me to make sure the metals and the Lyme-related infections were eliminated.
Finding My True Path
Through the years, I continued to get periodic bio-energetic assessments. It helped me to overcome other health challenges and optimize my health, especially while traveling quite a bit and being exposed to toxic construction materials during my years as a corporate interior designer.
Becoming a big fan of bio-energetic healing, I went back to school to get my Masters in Holistic Health and eventually my Doctorate. I ended up following in my mother’s footsteps, helping others to heal holistically, ultimately becoming a bio-energetic practitioner.
I also became pregnant soon after I started following my new path. This became another chapter in my healing journey. I had a wonderful pregnancy and even gave birth at home at the age of 42. However, I took a long time to recover from what some would call postpartum depression. It turned out my Lyme Disease came back with a vengeance after the trauma of birthing. (I learned later that this is not uncommon. Trauma is a trigger for Lyme Disease and other dormant health issues.)
My son is now a teenager, and he gets regular screenings too. I have found that working with children is especially rewarding. Today’s children are exposed to so many things in this world that were not around when I was a child. Children also inherit the toxins of their parents, particularly the oldest child. Their smaller bodies are affected so much more dramatically, especially as newer generations have less resistance and more health issues. The good news is that they also tend to heal much easier. Their bodies are typically more responsive.
Holistic Health Strategies
When I was a teenager, improving your diet and adding supplements was often all you needed to heal. Now we have more depleted soils, more chemicals in our food and water, and many other toxic products in our lives. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) and electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) are also big culprits. (See My EMF Journey here.) To truly heal, our bodies need multiple strategies.
I am on a mission to teach others the power of self-healing. Let me share with you my vast knowledge of holistic health principles, carefully developed through years of both professional and self-study as I healed myself and my family and helped many others along the way.
